About 10 miles west of Cottage Grove, the Siuslaw River (pronounced sigh-YOU-slaw) flows through the mountains along the Pacific coast of Oregon. Historically the Siuslaw has been a spawning ground for Coho and Chinook salmon, and though Coho populations have declined somewhat, the river remains rife with Chinook. From the first of September to the first of November, Willamette Valley Outfitters casts for Fall Kings (Chinook), then in January and February the winter steelhead make their appearance.
